Introduction: Life as a Geology Major

As you know by now (hence the title), I am a Geology student here at the University of Oklahoma.  As exciting as that sounds I had a pretty boring summer all thanks to my summer class I took at the Oklahoma City Community College. Maybe it would not have been so horrible if it were not Physics II but yes, the answer is, it was as bad as it sounds. So, unfortunately, no thrilling tails of climbing up a mountain or identifying a new rock species for me this summer.

(Per my post; my summer was boring and this was taken a few years back
at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs)

On a not so depressing note, I am now officially a Norman resident within walking distance to campus. I no longer have to dodge construction (which is pretty much impossible these days) and plan my day around traffic like I was attempting to do as a commuter. I am also a student assistant in the Engineering Dean's Office so the choice to move was pretty obvious when my entire day and evenings were spent in Norman.

Other than being a Geology student and loving everything rocks, I love to bake. For as far back as I can remember I always thought I would grow up to own my own bakery. That was at least until I actually worked in a bakery and after a few months decided the bakery life was just not for me and made it my hobby instead of career goal. It is oddly a stress reliever for me, kind of like the memes you see online about having so much to do you just take a nap instead well... when I'm feeling overwhelmed I bake. My specialty I only break out for special occasions though is cheesecake. Not that I'm biased or anything but I'm going to go ahead and say it is better than Cheesecake Factory's cheesecake and that is pretty good!

(The cheesecake mentioned above with a strawberry topping)

Not much going on right now in this geologists life, just excited to get this semester started!

I've recently started listening to Tori Kelly lately. She was a contestant on American Idol and didn't even make it to the live show! Can you believe it?? Anyway here she is singing one of her songs acoustically.

  1. I know how you feel. I took AP Physics in high school and it went poorly, if it could be described as going at all. Physics and I have decided to stay away from each other. Fortunately, I haven't had to enter into the same agreement with most subjects.

I'm not a baker (my last effort at bread having formed a sort of carapace in the oven), but I'm always up for eating baked goods. I'm glad you have a knack for baking delicious things. Most of my cooking endeavors take place on the stove and I'm proud to say that I pan-fry a mean salmon fillet. I'm not afraid to try new recipes if I have the time; fortunately, what I've tried so far has turned out pretty well.

  2. Rock species: that sounds so cool, Candace! When I was little, we lived in Tucson which had a big Gem and Mineral show every year, and my dad used to take me there and we would buy some geodes to crack open. I always thought that was the coolest thing ever: what mystery would we find inside? They were all pretty inside, but the best ones were especially pretty.

If you keep an eye out for rocks and mountains in this class, you will find all kinds of great stories (like the mountains who used to have wings), and there are also some great legends about rock formations that people connect to ancient stories, as well as some famous cave temples. Have you heard of those? There's a list here at Wikipedia: rock-cut temples in India - the Ellora Caves are probably the most famous, along with the Elephanta Caves. Some of the comic books on reserve in Bizzell is about that, so you might want to consider that when you do your browsing for project resources later this week: these caves are a very famous phenomenon in India!

  3. Hi Candace! I think it is so interesting that you are a Geology major! Science is not my thing, but I did take Geology for Non-Science majors. I really enjoyed the lab portion of the class. I'm still not good at science, but I got pretty good at identifying rocks there for a semester!

I also love to bake in my free time! I think it's funny that you said you find it to be a stress-reliever because I feel the exact same way. When I was younger, I traveled through Georgia and stopped at Paula Dean's restaurant. It was so delicious that I had to buy her cookbook. Since then, it has always been my go-to cookbook for deserts! They are the BEST! Her Gooey Butter Cakes are my favorite...you'll have to check them out.

  4. I took a Volcanoes and Earthquakes class my freshman year. We rolled over a few rock types in there. (Get it? Rock and Roll? I'm lame.) That's awesome that you found something you're so into. Especially, because it's not something people usually offer up as their majors. It makes you unique!

Physics II sounds rough. I wasn't fond of the prequel Physics I. My least favorite class so far has been statistics. Which is weird, because I enjoyed all my other maths.

It's smart to take some classes at OCCC though. You can save a ton of money that way!

I'm in a boat similar to you with regards to driving. I managed to get all my classes online this semester, but I'll for sure have to move to Norman in the spring. I think the new liscence plate for Oklahoma should have a construction cone on it instead of a bison. Ugh.

Last tangent, I promise. I had a friend who went the opposite route of you. She went from a Chemistry major to being a baker. Specifically, a desert baker. Life is just kind of funny that way. Anyway, I hope you have a great semester!

  5. Hello!! Physics II was absolutely terrible for me as well, so I definitely understand if it wasn't the highlight of your summer. I'm sure that your trip to Garden of the Gods was amazing, though, because the picture looks amazing!

What made you choose geology? Has your love for rocks been a long-time thing or did a class that you took impact you? Either way, it's so neat! Back when I was a CS major, I was in Sarkeys all the time for labs and I used to love looking at all the specimens on display.

  6. Hi Candace! I love to bake! I actually just started working with my mom's company Giftable Goodies, so I am baking now on the side for some extra money! I completely relate when you say it's your stress reliever. My only problem is that when I bake, I have terrible will power and end up eating everything I bake pretty quickly after I'm done. Having cookies last me to next week is impossible. So for my own health I can't bake as much as I would like ;)
I'm glad you were able to move closer to campus, I can't imagine having to deal with not only traffic but also commuter parking here at OU. I hope you enjoy your new living situation! Nice to meet you!

  7. Geology is such a cool major! I love the rock sale that they have at Sarkeys sometimes; last time I bought a flat quartz crystal and a rose rock. I actually really enjoyed Physics II so that makes me sad haha but then again I really like math and all that weird stuff. I also had a relatively boring summer in Maryland, so I can sympathize with not doing that much cool stuff but it is so nice to just relax sometimes.

  8. YUUUMMMMMMM, cheesecake! Cheesecake is one of those foods that I love so much, I could (and would, and have) eat the entire thing! That's why I limit myself to only having it once a year, on my birthday. Otherwise, hello 8,000 calories in one sitting, all year round!;) It's definitely a special occasion treat.

Also, we just traded places! I lived in Norman, right near Andrew's Park, for two years, and just moved up to OKC. So, now I'm the one having to navigate construction and plan around traffic. Booooooo! But, we had to do it, so my husband's commute (he works in OKC) wouldn't be so bad. Enjoy being right next to campus! I think it's easier to attend all the extracurricular events on campus that you want to when you're literally right next door, instead of having to calculate in drive time too!

  9. I feel you on a spiritual level on the summer class’s thing. I took chemistry 2 (also at occc heyy) over the summer and while I very much enjoyed it, it was still a bummer since it took a huge chunk of my summer away. Mhmmmm that cheesecake looks amazing! I also love to bake. I always follow recipes, so I wouldn’t consider myself a very skilled one but I can make a mean macaron and boy are those hard (I’ve failed a total of about 5 times so far before I finally succeeded). Thank you for sharing a part of you with us!

  10. Hey CJ! I rarely meet geology majors so it’s super cool to finally meet one! I myself have been to the Garden of the Gods and it is absolutely beautiful. I’m getting back into baking as well since the holiday season is slowly coming upon us! I love to make cakes and cookies. My family is German so I am currently trying to master some more challenging traditional desserts! I hope you have a great semester!

  11. Geology sounds like such an exciting major! I just want to say that I am so incredibly sorry you had to take physics II during the summer! I can relate as I was stuck taking physiology. I bet you are absolutely stoked to not have to deal with the burden of construction. Having the university within walking distance is such a nice luxury to have! I hope you have a great semester!

  12. Hello! I thought I had read your blog before, but apparently not. Geology is such an interesting major. My boyfriend's aunt is a geologist in India so we have our own little collection of rocks and fossils. Physics II is so demanding, but it's good to hear that you made it through. I hope your job on campus is going well. The best part about spending so much time around campus is getting to eat on Campus Corner. Jax and Pepe Delgado's are my favorite.

  13. Okay, speaking of cheesecake.... is there even a cheesecake factory around Oklahoma?! I haven't been to one in FOREVER. Anyway.
I'm sure it was a pain taking all those summer classes, but hey, at least they're done! I couldn't imagine taking Physics, let alone Physics II. Power to ya, girl. Or should I say... rock on? (Ugh, who am I)
I was super stupid and I waited until now to finish up my gen eds. Did sophomore me really need a semester without gen eds?? Ugh. I'm so surprised I haven't been to your blog yet! Better late than never I suppose! Nice to meet ya :)

  14. Hello, it's nice to meet you. That picture of cheesecake really made me hungry. I baked a pumpkin pie last night but now cheesecake sounds very good haha. I think geology is a really cool major choice. I've always wanted to go to the mineral auction that gets held every year but somehow never find myself going. Maybe I'll stop by next time.

  15. Hi Candace! That stinks that you had to take Physics over the summer...not a great way to spend your time off from school. At least you don't have to worry about it during the regular school year now! My sister took biology over the summer, so I saw how much time someone has to put into a science class over the summer! That's awesome that you like baking! I enjoy it as well, but I'm not too good! I could not imagine working bakers hours! I'm excited to read some of your stories!

  16. I feel you with taking that summer class. I also took Physics during the summer and it ruined my summer. I am glad however that we both how it out of our way now. It nice that you got to atleast experience life as a baker and decide what you wanted to do with it. I can completely understand the commuting struggle you went through.
